Instructions

Task 3

In this task, we are to apply knowledge and experience to create or improve a font that addresses a problem or adds value in graphic design, animation, new media, or entertainment design. The project can take one of three forms:
  • Creating a new font
  • Improving an existing font
  • Experimenting
The process involves researching and analyzing the chosen area, developing concepts, designing and creating the font, and finally applying and presenting it. Evaluation will be based on creativity, functionality, effectiveness, execution, and presentation.

Progress

    1. Research
Before starting, gather examples and inspiration from various sources to explore different typographic styles.

    2. Digitalisation
After obtaining my topic approval, I start digitalizing the font using Adobe Illustrator. This involves translating hand-drawn sketches into digital format and ensuring consistency in style, weight, and spacing. Each character is meticulously crafted, and preliminary tests are conducted to refine readability and aesthetics before broader testing and application.

    3. FontLab
After making several adjustments and finalizing the font designs, I import them into FontLab and start generating the final font files.

      5. Font Applications
After exporting the font to Font Book, I can begin using it and start working on my font application. Since my font design emphasizes speed, I will apply it to car-related projects.

Feedbacks
Week 9 (19/6/24):
Prepare for Task 3 by creating a proposal and presenting it in class. The proposal should include at least three ideas, each supported by detailed research and a clear purpose statement. Proceed to the next step only after receiving Sir's approval.

Week 10 (26/6/24):
Topic approved, can proceed to the next step. Continue refining the letterforms and complete the remaining letters, ensuring consistency throughout. Make sure that if not designing in italic, avoid mixing in italic styles.

Week 11 (3/7/24):
Overall it looks good, can continue by completing the lowercase letters and numbers.

Week 12 (10/7/24):
Can begin working on the font presentation and application.

Week 13 (17/7/24):
Absent

Reflections
Experience
In Task 3, I created a typeface by starting with research to gather ideas and understand typographic trends. I sketched different designs, then used FontLab and Adobe illsdtater to digitize and refine them.

Observations
Typography is used in many different ways, each with specific needs. It's important to balance creativity with readability. The process of developing a typeface is iterative, involving multiple rounds of refinement and attention to detail.

Findings
Creating a good font requires careful attention to detail and thorough testing to identify and fix any issues. Skills in design software are essential for turning sketches into digital fonts and making necessary improvements.
