Module Information

  Project 1 | Proposal

Brief

The task is to propose a final design concept centered around the theme of "Cultural Sensitivity in Design." This design should reflect students' understanding and interpretation of global issues and design aesthetics. The goal is to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture perceived as sensitive and frame the study within the chosen theme. The proposed design should convey the cultural aspect without altering the actual facts but should present an interpretation and adaptation that raises awareness among viewers. Preliminary ideas for visually expressing this interpretation using design language are required, each supported by a short rationale. Visual research should be conducted to aid idea generation and expand upon the design concepts.

Group 17 Proposal for culture sensitivity

  Project 2 | Field Study

Brief
  • Conduct data gathering process focusing on cultural sensitivity in design.
  • Collect visual, oral, textual, and tactile artefacts relevant to the chosen culture.
  • Methods include observation, interviews with stakeholders (including guest speakers), and visual research online and physically.
  • Record and document artefacts with details such as type, purpose, symbolism, and cultural/historical background.
  • Ensure comprehensive documentation to inform ideation in Project 1 (proposal).
Data Collection

 Project 3 | Final Project

Brief
  • After completing research, data collection, and participation in class lectures, students will produce visual design outcomes related to their interpretation of the theme.
  • Utilize data collected from research trips to inform visual design outcomes.
  • Focus on interpreting and defining "Framing" while considering cultural and aesthetic aspects, balanced with design knowledge.
  • Engage in various directions and approaches, such as experimental design/art, using manual, digital, or combined media.

Reflection

Throughout this course, I've delved into the concept of cultural sensitivity in design, with our group specifically focusing on Thai culture. Before this, my understanding of Thai culture was limited. However, through coursework and tasks, I've gained a deeper insight. Task 1 prompted me to propose a design concept focusing on "Cultural Sensitivity in Design," with our group aiming to integrate elements of Thai culture to promote awareness and respect. Task 2 involved extensive data gathering, encompassing visual, oral, textual, and tactile artefacts related to Thai culture, which provided rich inspiration for my design process. In the final task, I used this knowledge to produce visually impactful designs, prioritising simplicity to effectively convey my respect and understanding of Thai culture. Overall, this course has not only expanded my design skills but also deepened my appreciation for diverse cultures, which I believe will greatly enhance my future design endeavours.
