Task 2 | Visual Analysis week 3 (21/02/2024)
Phase 1 : Observation
The chosen design is a rectangular poster. At its center is the Earth wearing a mask, emphasizing the environmental message. Surrounding the Earth are various forms of litter and polluted clouds. Below the image, there is bold text that reads "Dirty Air Today, Cloudy Future Tomorrow," urging people to take action against environmental degradation.
1. Contrast: The depiction of Earth in the design starkly contrasts with the usual imagery of pristine nature. Earth wearing a mask, shrouded in pollution, echoes the caption "Dirty Air Today, Cloudy Future Tomorrow." This sharp contrast highlights the severity of environmental issues, grabbing viewers' attention.
2. Emphasis: By portraying Earth wearing a mask and illustrating air pollution, the design emphasises environmental degradation. The bold text further creates a clear focal point, drawing viewers' attention and emphasising the urgency of the message.
3. Harmony and Unity: Despite featuring multiple elements such as Earth, pollution, factories, and polluted water, they are presented in a cohesive manner in the design. This harmony and unity enhance visual appeal while ensuring ease of understanding the message.
4. Word and Image: The text "Dirty Air Today, Cloudy Future Tomorrow." directly complements the image, emphasising the importance of climate change for the Earth's climate and further explaining the meaning of the image.
Phase 3 : Interpretation
The interpretation of the poster centers on its environmental message and the urgent call to action it conveys. The Earth depicted wearing a mask symbolises the planet's struggle with pollution and environmental degradation. Surrounding the Earth are various forms of litter and polluted clouds, indicating the widespread impact of human activity on the environment. The bold text below the image, "Today's air is polluted, tomorrow's future is bleak," underscores the severity of the situation and emphasises the need for immediate action to address environmental issues.
